First Due to the "U"
The College Park Volunteer Fire Department was organized in 1925 to provide fire protection to the citizens and property of College Park as well as the University of Maryland. In our first year of operation we responded to 21 calls for service, armed with only soda acid fire extinguishers and a homemade fire engine built from an obsolete DCFD horse drawn hose wagon and a motorized delivery truck.
Fast forward to today. The CPVFD is in our third firehouse built in 1994. This state of the art facility is located on Baltimore Avenue, directly across from the main gate of the University of Maryland. Last year we responded to nearly 5,000 calls for service with Two Class A Pumpers, Ladder Truck, Foam Unit, HAZMAT Unit, Two BLS Ambulances, and Various Support Vehicles. The CPVFD continues to be a very strong volunteer organization handling the vast majority of the 5,000 calls the station runs. The cornerstone of our volunteer membership is the world renowned "Sackroom". This is the area of our station where our full time student live-in volunteers live and work from day in and day out. The Sackroom is one of the longest standing most successful student live-in programs in the nation.
We invite anyone who is interested in getting more information on our unique, exciting, successful, organization to stop by and visit us in person! Anyone including perspective members, college students, and members of the community are encouraged to stop by and get a tour of the station, meet our members, and even ride along with us on emergency calls!
